Elmendorf Air Force Base and Fort Richardson just announced a joint venture and becoming a joint base. Having a joint BX/PX and Commissary, also a joint hospital has made it more convenient for base residents. They joint venture is also building a new Veterans Hospital and Clinic just outside of the bases to provide care to the many veterans in Anchorage and all over Alaska.
Several Presidents have honored the State of Alaska with a visit or two. Current President, Barack Obama recently visited Elemendorf Air Force Base. Originally scheduled to meet with local government leaders and with base commanders on Veterans Day he was delayed on his trip to Asia. Only staying a few hours on the Air Force Base, Obama met with the family of a recently fallen soldier. He died in Afgahnistan just a few weeks ago.
