Anchorage has a short history, compared to most cities and states in the U.S, but it is not without dynamic. In the 1800s Secretary of State William Seward orchestrated the purchase of the Alaska Territory from Russia for $7.2 million dollars. Chump change in today's terms and even at the time it was only 2 cents an acre. Many U.S. Senators believed the purchase to be a blunder...at least until gold was discovered in Alaska in 1888. Alaska became a state in 1959, and this year Alaskans celebrated it's 50th birthday as a state. This boosted economic growth and helped Anchorage grow significantly. It wasn't until 1968 when oil was discovered in Prudoe Bay that Alaska really began to grow.
